Beachy Head

Went to Beachy Head again yesterday. Didn’t jump off this time either.

Again, a super drive down, and the Blackwall Tunnel wasn’t closed on the way back. Somewhat unsatisfactory food stop at the Birling Gap hotel (and obviously can’t drink), and a short wander around the cliff tops - clear out the cobwebs etc.
We didn’t spend [...]

I like trucking

I read with amusement/disbelief this article on The Daily Mash today.
Satire - yes. Factual - possibly.
Still, £42k for driving a truck does seem rather high compared to other jobs requiring more skill, more responsibility and better education.
I think that at the rate these people get pay rises, I’ll be able to retire from capital markets [...]

Boss

My boss has gone on holiday this week (and next week), and I’ve been left in charge.
Being the boss seems to involve gathering status information, writing it down and presenting it to some other bosses and business customers. Due to dependencies with other teams, it also involves a lot of getting them to provide status [...]

Things to do when unemployed

A few friends and colleagues find themselves between jobs at the moment (evil credit crunch and all that), so I’ve come up with a few things to do whilst unemployed:

Find a new job - bit obvious really, but should be a priority, even if you’ve got wads of redundancy money. It will run out.
Don’t just [...]

Women in IT

It is oft observed that there are few women in IT. Certainly, in my experience, there have been a lot more blokes than women, but today, I particularly observed:

my wife is in IT (and proper development too, I’m rather pleased to say)
in my team at work, women out-number chaps 2:1
the big boss of IT is [...]

Summer!

It’s a lovely sunny summer (ish) day in London today. Hurrah!
Chelsea beat Manchester Utd in the Premiership - game on… hurrah!
I have to work and can’t drink. Bah

Frog

Today, I needed to know how you say “frog” in a number of languages (for work - don’t ask).
So finding http://michelesworld.net/dmm2/frog/sayfrog.htm was really useful

2007

So here we are at the end of 2007, and for me and mine, it was a good year.
I started the year unemployed after 4.5 years at my last job. It was time to move on and a subsequently enjoyed a couple of months chilling, finishing Zelda and generally relaxing.
I also started a new blog [...]

Outlook sucks

Today was my first day back at work after a two-week holiday.
I expected to spend a bit of time trawling through all the email I receive, trying to spot the important ones from the spam *, but lo, what was this?
30,000 messages.
About 380MB of email.
My mailbox limit at work is approx 80MB at which point [...]

Work gravity

So I’m on holiday (or as I’m in the US of A, on vacation).
I’m in NYC and have been for two and a half days after a week in Las Vegas, yet I seem unable to stay away from the office, and it’s all by coincidence.
Our hotel here, it turns out, is one block away [...]
