RON

I’ve been using ‘regular’ unleaded in Herman so far which is 95 RON, however, I read that the larger capacity TFSI engines are designed for higher octane ’super’ unleaded of 97 or 98 RON.

According to Audi forums, it would seem that the engine is quite capable of using a smaller RON but would be less efficient and produce lower power.

I checked the manual/fuel guide and it says “95 or higher,” so I think I might try a few tankfuls of ’super.’

Will see if it makes a difference.

    I should. I used to run my race car on shell optimax with a millers competition additive that made it about 100 ron, made a noticable difference. Of course, I didn’t have much choice as it was old and set up specially for that fuel.

    Your fancy modern car can adjust up and down by detecting detonation in the cylinders or some such trickery.

    You could also consider having the ECU remapped :) Being a geek you can doubtless do this yourself, have a google around for ODBII protocols and such :) I’ve a prototype OS X fault code reader that uses ODB, but I got bored of developing once it solved my immediate problem, as you do…

    @Richy - sounds interesting on the ECU remapping, but I think I’ll keep my warrantee intact for the time being.

    But you’re right, geekery would def make me want to play at some point :-)

    @Dom - thanks - I now have a dodgy tune in my head :(

    Yeah, I’ve not dared remap my car yet even though it’s out of warranty. Fault code reading is useful though if your engine light comes on. You can see what’s wrong before the garage tell you it’s a million quid. I think VAG (volkswagen/audi) cars can set the service light on for various stupid things e.g. you start the engine with the fuel cap off, in which case you obviously don’t want to pay to have it reset…

    My Mini (also being of German stock) seems completely agnostic to RONs. It is much more sensitive to the particular petrol rather than the octane - seems to like Esso, not so keen on BP and Shell is right out.
