A few friends and colleagues find themselves between jobs at the moment (evil credit crunch and all that), so I’ve come up with a few things to do whilst unemployed:
- Find a new job - bit obvious really, but should be a priority, even if you’ve got wads of redundancy money. It will run out.
- Don’t just chill out for too long as you’ll end up feeling pressure to do something, or to get a job.
- Don’t think people envy you for having free time. They don’t. Play the pity angle ….
- …. which means people will buy you drinks, thinking you can’t afford it
- Learn something new. You do have free time, so take advantage of it. When I had a few months of at the beginning of this year, I decided to learn PowerShell and blog about it. Stop doing this new thing once you get a new job.
- Buy more lottery tickets.
- Play the latest Wii/XBox/PS3 game to completion. In my case, it was Zelda - Twilight Princess on the Wii.
- If you have a live-in other half, do a higher percentage of the housework.

Working on it, although will work harder on it once I’ve had a little break
I’m still playing the pity angle though…
There will be a certain amount of chilling, but I won’t be overdoing it
Oh, they do
…but they seem to think that having a years salary coming to me as making me rich, not poor
Going to learn lots of new things, and brush up on the old stuff. Wont stop doing this once I get a job as it’s related to what I want to be doing/
May have to be more than one game
I already do it all… well, I also have cleaners, but you know what I mean
Also, I am not going to be unemployed. I am going to be a photographer
It’s a semantic difference, but and important one
“Also, I am not going to be unemployed. I am going to be a photographer It’s a semantic difference, but and important one”
– yes, with the former, you can get benefits from the gov
Not much in the way of benefits, and I shall be telling them that I am unemployed. This is more for when people ask me what I do
nah, cant agree with any of that
actually, except the play games to completion
if you have time off, enjoy it while you can, dont think about getting a job until you have to!
as the old adage (sp?) says no one on their deathbed complains that they wished that had spent more time at work!
so if your having time off at present, good on you - and im jealous … now buy me a beer;)
@thetechobear, I think you fall into a category of your own, besides, you were sort of a property developer whilst not doing any real work?
