Dear London Marathon Organisers…

This Sunday, you are organising the London Marathon, a fine tradition and much loved by all.

However, on Sunday, the side road leading to my home is going to be closed. For most of the day.

How do I know this? It’s not because you put up signs, or perhaps posted a noticed through my letterbox, say, two weeks in advance*. No, it’s because it happens every year, so I’m getting used to it.

This year, however, I have a car, and actually might want to go somewhere (and come back) on Sunday. But I can’t unless I leave early, come back late, or find somewhere else to park my car.

If I choose the latter, will you, as the cause of the road closure, compensate me for my parking fees?

I suspect I’ll choose the former, a kind of reverse house arrest.

So thank you for this.

Sincerely,

soapyfrog

* yes, there is this but I had to google for it :(

    Very well put.

I suspect this is just a small warning of what will happen during the 2012 Olympics, where they will probably not only close my road, but build a rowing lake in the middle of it.

This used to happen to me when I lived in Docklands too.

I remember one year, back in the days when you could smoke, we ran out of cigarettes and the nearest shop was directly across the route of the marathon.
How we laughed as we pushed our way through the cheering crowds, ducked under the cordon, nipped through the heaving, sweaty throng of joggers and made it to the other side only to be reprimanded by a cheerful bobby and told we wouldn’t be going back :(
Still, we got the smokes and went to the pub until the excitement had died down - which must have been a sufficiently long time as I can’t remember if we had any issues getting back home or not.

I must admit my previous two places of abode were hampered somewhat by the marathon. It must also be coming up to an aniversary of me being an evil sod and walking out on Zoe as I seem to remember going to see the marathon was one of the last things we did. Ho hum.
